Walks at Chatsworth
The park and Stand Wood are free to walk all year, and the villages, river and gritstone edges around them make Chatsworth the best walking base in the eastern Peak District. Each route lists distance, time, terrain, where to park and where to eat afterwards.

Calton Lees to Chatsworth House
The classic first walk at Chatsworth: from the southern car park along the River Derwent to the west front of the house, with the whole park opening up as you go. The estate publishes 3 km and 5 km versions from the same start.

Chatsworth House to Edensor village
A short loop from the house to the estate village the 6th Duke had rebuilt out of sight of his windows in the 1830s. The churchyard holds the graves of Joseph Paxton and of Kathleen Kennedy, sister of the US president.

Baslow to Chatsworth House
The gentlest way to arrive at Chatsworth, and the one most visitors search for: park in Baslow, pass through the kissing gate by the Cannon Kitchen tea room and walk south through the park with the house growing in front of you. About 2.5 km each way.

Chatsworth to Beeley along the Derwent
South through the park past Calton Lees to the estate village of Beeley, whose two pubs make it the natural lunch stop, then back across the parkland with a different angle on the house.

Chatsworth to Pilsley circuit
A longer, mostly level loop through the estate villages that the estate grades as easy: Edensor, then Pilsley for the farm shop and café, returning by the fields above the park.

Rowsley to Chatsworth via the Derwent
A linear approach from the south, following the Derwent up through Beeley and into the park at Calton Lees, arriving at the house along the river. Peak Rail's steam trains run from Rowsley in season, which makes a good return leg by bus or a second car.

Stand Wood, the Hunting Tower and Emperor Lake
The wooded hill behind the house is free to walk all year. A stiff climb brings you to the Elizabethan Hunting Tower and the lakes that feed the garden's fountains and the Cascade, with the best high view of the house and park.

Chatsworth to Bakewell circuit
The estate's own suggested route linking the house with the market town: out through Edensor and over the high pasture to Bakewell for a pudding, back along the River Wye and through woodland.

Baslow Edge and Curbar Edge
The gritstone edges north of Baslow give the widest views in the area, including the whole of Chatsworth park below. Wellington's Monument and the Eagle Stone are on Baslow Edge; Curbar Edge has the climbers' crags.

Birchen Edge and Nelson's Monument
A short moorland loop to the monument raised to Nelson in 1810 and the three gritstone boulders carved with the names of his ships, Victory, Defiance and Royal Soverin (sic).

Beeley Moor and Hob Hurst's House
Up from the village onto the heather moor east of the park to a Bronze Age burial mound with a square ditch, one of the first monuments in England to be legally protected. Quiet, wide views and grouse.

Walking, cycling, picnicking and playing are free in the public parkland and Stand Wood, all year.
Can I take my dog on walks at Chatsworth?
Well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome in the garden and the park. Only assistance dogs may enter the house, the farmyard and the adventure playground. On the estate farms and moors keep dogs on leads near livestock.
Where is the best place to park for a walk at Chatsworth?
For the park, Calton Lees car park (DE4 2NX) at the southern end or the main house car park (DE45 1PP); both charge £7.50–£10 a day unless you have booked tickets online. For a free walk in, park in Baslow at Nether End and walk through the park.
How long is the walk from Baslow to Chatsworth House?
About 1.5 miles (2.5 km) each way on a surfaced path through the north park, roughly 30 minutes at an easy pace.
