Chatsworth on screen

Chatsworth has been Pemberley twice, a Georgian duchess’s real home once and a Kubrick set before any of them. The list below is the one Wikipedia maintains; it is not complete and the estate does not publish its own.

Standing in the shot

The three Pride & Prejudice locations are all on the standard house route: the Painted Hall is the first big room you enter, the Sculpture Gallery is near the end, and the west front is what you see across the river from the Calton Lees walk. The garden’s Cascade and the Emperor Fountain appear in the background of several productions, and the Hunting Tower above Stand Wood is the vantage point the drone shots come from (visitors cannot fly drones, see below).

Personal photography is welcome. Tripods, lighting, selfie sticks, flash and wearable cameras are not; drones are banned across the estate. Wedding photography is only possible through the estate’s own wedding packages; visitors in wedding dress are not admitted.

Was Pride and Prejudice filmed at Chatsworth?

Yes. The 2005 film with Keira Knightley used Chatsworth as Pemberley: the Sculpture Gallery (where Elizabeth sees the bust of Darcy), the Painted Hall and the west front all appear. The 1995 BBC series used Lyme Park in Cheshire instead.

Is Chatsworth the real Pemberley?

Austen never said. But the novel has Elizabeth visit Chatsworth on her Derbyshire tour before Pemberley, the two houses are a few miles apart in the story, and the estate has happily played Pemberley on screen twice.

Can I take photos inside Chatsworth House?

Which rooms from The Duchess are at Chatsworth?
