Crowds: busy
Chatsworth in September
The Country Fair fills the park for three days at the start of the month, the Queen’s Reading Room literary festival follows, and the season exhibition runs to early October. Schools go back, so weekdays get quieter.
In the garden
Still full; the first autumn colour in the arboretum by the end of the month.
Walking
Arguably the best walking month: firm paths, warm afternoons, cooler mornings, and the heather still out on the moors.
What to bring
A fleece for the evening; the temperature drops fast once the sun leaves the valley.
