Christmas at Chatsworth is three things in one ticket (the dressed house, the garden light trail, and until 13 December the market), and the light trail only works after dark. Everything below follows from that.
Book the right slot
Tickets are advance-only and give you a timed house slot. Book one for early afternoon. You can arrive any time from 9am and go into the garden and market first; the house takes about ninety minutes; and the light trail begins as the sun goes, around 4pm in November and December. A morning slot means either leaving before the lights or killing three hours; a late slot means seeing the market by torchlight.
11.00: arrive and shuttle
From 7 November to 13 December you park in the parkland car park and cross to the house by tractor-and-trailer shuttle (wheelchair accessible; the trackway can be muddy). From 14 December the main car park is back. Christmas tickets include a parking space per booking. Wear boots: the market is on grass and the shuttle trackway is unmade.
11.30: the market
Over a hundred stalls on the lawns in front of the house, open until 5.30pm on weekdays and 6pm at weekends. Do it now, in daylight, before the house slot, and before the afternoon crowd arrives. Weekday mornings in November are the quiet version; weekends in December are the queue version.
12.30: lunch
The market’s food stalls are the easy answer. The stables courtyard cafes and the farmyard cafe are the warm one. For a table with a booking, the estate pubs at Beeley and Pilsley are a five-minute drive; they are full at weekends in December without one.
14.00: the house
The theme is announced in mid-September and the dressing runs through the whole visitor route. Ninety minutes. No pushchairs or big bags inside (£1 lockers).
15.45: the light trail
Into the garden as the light goes. Dogs on leads are allowed on the trail; not in the house, farmyard or playground. The farmyard runs Christmas crafts for children through the afternoon and is included in the ticket.
17.30: leave
Shuttle back to the car in the dark (the trailer is lit; the trackway is not), or if you came in on foot from Baslow, a torch for the park path. The A619 towards Chesterfield and the M1 is the quicker exit than the A6 south.
Cheaper versions
The market alone is free and needs no ticket; only the house and light trail are ticketed. A weekday walk in from Baslow to the market in the first half of November, back before dark, costs the bus fare or the village car park.
