Christmas is Chatsworth’s biggest season and the one where the ordinary rules are suspended: compulsory booking, timed entry, a different car park and a shuttle. Here is how it fits together.
Dates
Christmas at Chatsworth: 7 November 2026 to 3 January 2027. Christmas Market: 7 November to 13 December 2026, 10am–5.30pm on weekdays and 10am–6pm at weekends.
The theme of the house dressing is announced in mid-September.
Tickets
Adults (17 and over) £40, or £36.36 without the Gift Aid donation. Children 3–16 £12 (£10.90). Under-3s free. All tickets must be booked in advance; there is no turning up on the day.
The ticket includes the dressed house, the garden with its light trail, the farmyard and playground with seasonal activities, one parking space per booking and, while it is on, the market. Friends of Chatsworth members get Christmas tickets free.
You are given a timed slot for the house. You can arrive from 9am and go into the garden and market before your house time. The light trail is the after-dark part; sunset is around 4pm in December, so a mid-afternoon house slot gives you the market in daylight and the trail at dusk.
The market
Over a hundred stalls of gifts, food and drink on the lawns in front of the house. Entry is free, and you do not need a Christmas ticket to come to the market alone. It is on grass: wear boots. Weekends are very busy; a weekday morning in the first half of November is the quiet way to do it.
Parking and the shuttle
From 7 November to 13 December the house car park is only for visitors with a pre-booked event, dining or market ticket. Everyone else parks in the parkland car park and rides a tractor-and-trailer shuttle across the park to the house and market. It is wheelchair accessible, and the trackway can be muddy. From 14 December the main house car park is used again. Christmas tickets include a parking space per booking either way.
Dogs
On leads in the garden (including the light trail) and the parkland. Not in the house, farmyard or playground, other than assistance dogs.
Avoiding the worst of it
- The first two weeks of November on a weekday: the house is dressed, the market is on, and the crowds have not arrived.
- After 13 December the market has gone but the main car park is back and the house is quieter in the mornings.
- The days between Christmas and New Year are the busiest of the year. If you must, book the first house slot.
- Combine it with the flat walk in from Baslow if the shuttle queue looks long; it is 1.5 miles and mostly surfaced.
